Continuous innovation is at the heart of CytoSMART
CytoSMART Technologies was founded in 2012 by a team of engineers with a great interest in developing optimized solutions for cell culture monitoring and analysis. We are continuously improving our products to aid the life science community. By designing and manufacturing live-cell analysis platforms, we strive to provide optimized solutions for the traditional complex processes. We believe that maintaining relations with real end-users is essential for the success of everyone involved.

2012
Joffry Maltha and Jan-Willem Van Bree founded CytoSMART Technologies with the aim of developing optimized and affordable solutions for cell culture monitoring and analysis.

2013
Introduced the Lux 10X, which laid the foundation for CytoSMART to grow as an innovator in kinetic live-cell imaging.

2016
Introduced the CytoSMART Exact, a brightfield automated cell counter. Designed to take the guesswork out of routine cell counting, generating more accurate and reproducible results in a fraction of the time.

2017
Introduced the CytoSMART Lux 2, a miniaturized microscope for cell culture monitoring and quality control designed to automatically track and analyze dynamic cellular processes including cell proliferation, morphology changes, and motility.

2018
Signed an agreement with Corning Incorporated for exclusive distribution of the Corning Cell Counter.

2019
Introduced the CytoSMART Omni, an automated brightfield microscope capable of continuous multiwell imaging directly from the incubator. Users can perform kinetic assays that capture cellular behavior for days or even weeks at a time.

2020
Introduced the CytoSMART Lux3 FL, a miniaturized fluorescence live-cell imaging system providing readily available fluorescent labels to better visualize cellular processes such as growth, proliferation, differentiation, migration and apoptosis.

2020
Introduced the Organoid Counting Module, a state-of-the-art machine learning algorithm for rapid organoid detection and counting designed to simplify the time-consuming, user-dependent processes involved in organoid analysis.

2021
Introduced the Exact FL, an automated, dual fluorescence cell counter. The device provides an unprecedented level of detail, allowing users to distinguish between whole cells and cell debris, measure transfection efficiency, or evaluate cell viability.

2021
Introduced the Lux3 BR, a brightfield microscope that facilitates label-free microscopy with high image quality. Its compact size, combined with its high-resolution camera and the ability to be used within an incubator, eliminates the choice between optimal cell culture conditions and image quality.

2022
Axion BioSystems acquires CytoSMART Technologies. Joffry Maltha, CEO of CytoSMART Technology, commented: “Axion’s overall mission and corporate culture align with our efforts to provide scientists around the world with high-quality, easy-to-use products to advance their research goals. With Axion’s resources and experience, we look forward to accelerating our market growth and product innovation.’’

2022
Introduced Omni FL, a fluorescence and brightfield microscope designed to image live cells directly inside a cell culture incubator. The device can be used for both continuous cell culture monitoring and endpoint assays, and could be incorporated into established automated workflows.

2022
Introduced the Organoid Analysis Module for the Omni systems. The software can identify, track, and analyze large numbers of organoids across an array of culture vessels with advanced machine-learning algorithms for faster, more accurate results. The module provides a non-invasive approach for organoid monitoring and examination.

2023
Introduced the Omni Pro 12 high-throughput live-cell analysis system for continuous multiwell imaging inside the incubator. Featuring a flexible multiplate design with automated handling and powerful AI-driven software, the innovative system adds dynamic visual results to any experiment.
